Prayer flags are the story of the Himalayas. Prayer flags are strung, erected, and hung for different reasons. Prayers, grief, good fortune. Lungta—the Windhorse coming from the east in the form of blue. Prayers flags are hung where there is the most wind at mountain passes and on bridges high above the water. The idea is that the wind carries the prayers with it, erasing first the block print with the prayer and then the fabric itself. The prayer continue to be evoked until the wind has itself exhausted and destroyed the vessel for the prayer and the flags are reduced to tatters.
